My C-section incision complication

Q:

I had to have my c-section incision opened up 6 days post op due to a hematoma. For the past 5 weeks my wound has been being wet to dry packed twice a day. I went to a different OB for a second opinion this week and she mentioned sending me to a plastic surgeon. I'm just curios what could be done by a surgeon and could this help my wound overall? Could this mean another surgery? Right now it is probably 1/8 inch deep and has excessive granulation tissue on right side.

That is a very good question. The reason your Family Practice physician wants you to see a plastic surgeon is that they are the experts in wound care and closure of complicated wounds. Unlike a Dermatologist who may perform wound care or a general surgeon who may deride open wounds, plastic surgeons have the knowledge, training and background to close complicated wounds with numerous surgical procedures such as flaps, grafts and free tissue transfer. It sounds like you probably most likely will not require these types of procedures but, it is nice to know your physician is sending you to expert in wound care rather than a less qualified practitioner. Best,
